World-renowned polar bear scientist and author Dr. Ian Stirling to make public appearance in Toronto
World-renowned polar bear scientist and author Dr. Ian Stirling will make a public appearance in Toronto, for a presentation and book signing arranged by Polar Bears International, the world’s leading polar bear conservation group.
The event, sponsored by Canada Goose and Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, will take place at The Fairmont Royal York on December 14, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. Admission to this special event is $40 and includes wine and hors d’oeuvres, as well as an autographed copy of Stirling’s new book, “Polar Bears: The Natural History of a Threatened Species.”
A research scientist emeritus with the Canadian Wildlife Service and an adjunct professor at the University of Alberta, Stirling is known worldwide for his work with polar bears. He began studying the Western Hudson Bay population—home to Churchill’s bears—in the 1970s and was the first to connect the dots between a decline in their condition and the rapid warming taking place in the Arctic.
Stirling has now released a book that compresses his four decades of research on polar bears into a new and comprehensive natural history—and PBI is honored to offer exclusive, signed copies through this event.
The book covers the polar bear’s evolution, life history, behavior, how scientists study them, and the current threat to their very existence. Stirling also explains why the polar bears of Hudson Bay have become so important to our understanding of the species, and how the town of Churchill became known as the Polar Bear Capital of the World. The book is beautifully illustrated with a diverse collection of world-class photography.
Canada Goose has been a proud and active supporter of Polar Bears International (PBI) for a number of years and shares the important goal with PBI to save the habitat of the world’s polar bears, by raising awareness about climate change and the effect is has on these threatened species. Canada Goose provides the official PBI uniforms for organization scientists, researchers and staff and are also for sale at select retail locations, with a portion of sales proceeds benefitting the organization.
Tickets for this event are available on a first-come, first-served basis through Polar Bears International. For more information, contact [email protected].
