Down Policy

Canada Goose does NOT use any down from live-plucking. Feather Industries Canada Limited, our ONLY supplier of down, has a longstanding Corporate Policy on NEVER purchasing any duck or goose down or feather materials that have been harvested by live-plucking.
Both Canada Goose and Feather Industries have a strong ethical position on this matter and have had for many years. We believe live-plucking is cruel and inhumane and we would never be party to or support this method of harvesting feathers and down.
All feathers and down procured by Feather Industries are bought from Approved Vendors. These suppliers are fully aware of our policies, and share the same philosophical and ethical position
DOWN PROCUREMENT
Canada Goose does NOT use any down from live-plucking. Feather Industries Canada Limited, our ONLY supplier of down, has a longstanding Corporate Policy on NEVER purchasing any duck or goose down or feather materials that have been harvested by live-plucking. Both Canada Goose and Feather Industries have a strong ethical position on this matter and have had for many years. We believe live-plucking is cruel and inhumane and we would never be party to or support this method of harvesting feathers and down. All feathers and down procured by Feather Industries are bought from Approved Vendors. These suppliers are fully aware of our policies, and share the same philosophical and ethical position. All of the down insulation that Canada Goose uses in its jackets comes as a b-product of the Canadian Poultry Industry. We do not use down from ducks or geese that are culled specifically for their down and there is no culture of live plucking in Canada.
ABOUT DOWN
Without any doubt, down is the world’s best insulator. It comes from the light, fluffy under-coatings that keep geese, ducks and other waterfowl warm. Each ounce of down has about 2 million fluffy filaments that interlock and overlap to create pockets of still air. It’s those pockets of air that insulate. Down provides approximately three times the warmth per ounce as synthetics insulators creating a significantly lighter and warmer product and when cared for properly, a high quality down will last for generations.
For over 50 years Canada Goose has developed an industry leading understanding of down insulation technology. That knowledge has allowed us to craft our own proprietary and unique blends of down to suit the very specific requirements of each of our down-insulated jackets. We make sure the right down goes in the right product.
We use three custom blends of down, where the blend is a percentage of down versus feathers:
- Canadian Hutterite white duck down (90/10 blend) 750 fill power.
- Canadian white goose down (80/20 blend) 675 fill power.
- Canadian white duck down (80.20 blend) 625 fill power
It is important to note that all of our down blends contain some Hutterite down. This is among the most premium Canadian down available. It’s main advantage comes from tremendously dense down plumules that hold and retain more warm air than most other types of down. That result in greater warmth generated by less, and in turn, jackets that are manufactured to be lighter without sacrificing warmth.
Canada Goose was a founding member of the Down Association of Canada and has been an active participant for the 30 years since. For more information on down and its benefits, please visit our partner’s website at www.downmark.ca.
